South Texas Research Facility

Vaughn delivered a three-level research facility that advanced scientific collaboration and expanded resources for the campus and broader community. The building housed offices, wet and dry laboratories, and conference rooms to support cutting-edge research. A major component was a 23,000 SF expansion of the existing vivarium at the Children’s Cancer Research Institute, seamlessly connected to the new STRF through a below-grade, cast-in-place concrete structure. To integrate the facilities, the team created three new openings in the vivarium’s basement walls and constructed a tunnel with stairs and an elevator for secure, efficient access. Work included installing specialized equipment such as cage washers and sterilizers to meet stringent research standards. Additionally, the campus central utility plant was expanded by 7,000 SF, adding chillers, cooling towers, pumps, a boiler, and new chilled water and steam lines, ensuring reliable infrastructure to support life-saving research and future growth.
