The Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) recently broke ground on a new secure juvenile correctional facility in Brazoria County. Located in Rosharon, the approximately 100-bed facility will serve youth within TJJD’s violence intervention continuum and strengthen safety for staff, youth, and the public.
The purpose-built facility will connect education, treatment, residential support, food service, and health services. The integrated layout, secure spaces, and improved sightlines will help employees maintain safe daily operations and provide youth consistent access to education and rehabilitative programming.
The facility will serve youth with some of the most significant violent and aggressive behaviors in TJJD’s care. Its secure design will provide employees with the structure and resources necessary to support accountability, rehabilitation, and positive outcomes.
“It is easy to build walls and fences. It is much harder to build a place that supports change,” said a senior project manager at Vaughn. “The restorative spaces, natural settings, and improved sightlines will support staff safety while giving youth an environment focused on rehabilitation. TJJD’s trust in Vaughn to help deliver its first new facility in more than 25 years makes this milestone especially meaningful to our project team.”
TJJD board members, state legislators, county juvenile probation chiefs, community partners, and TJJD staff joined representatives from the Texas Facilities Commission and Vaughn to celebrate the start of construction and recognize the years of planning behind the facility.
The facility will also support employees who dedicate their careers to helping youth rehabilitate. Its location near Greater Houston will expand access to the regional workforce and create employment opportunities in the surrounding community.
Vaughn is proud to partner with TJJD and the Texas Facilities Commission to strengthen staff, youth, and public safety and advance a juvenile justice system that promotes accountability, rehabilitation, and the potential for change.
