University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, San Antonio State Hospital

This replacement hospital project is a joint effort between the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. The new San Antonio State Hospital will provide long-term and short-term residential and crisis treatment for behavioral health issues. The 500,000 SF, two-story facility includes 296 beds for mental health patients, support spaces for patient learning and therapy, administrative and clinical support spaces, warehouse storage, kitchen, half-court gymnasium, chapel, court, pharmacy, maintenance and grounds, central utility plant, courtyards, and surface parking. The building also includes an open-air courtyard to let in natural light and to allow patients to go outside. The exterior skin contains masonry along the lower level with some banding of metal panels at the upper level.
