Project Overview

The Mays Cancer Center, a 50-year-old treatment and research facility, focuses on finding new and better ways to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. As part of a 35-phase project, we renovated occupied areas of the existing 200,000 SF multi-story operating clinic. This project included new examination rooms, MEP upgrades, new fire systems infrastructure, and renovations to existing spaces on multiple floors for code compliance. The renovations will allow the facility to provide patient care, innovative research, and comprehensive education to better serve South Texas and beyond.

Unique Challenge

Due to the code enhancements that had to take place in public spaces regarding egress, we coordinated and sequenced 35 phases of the project while ensuring the facility’s daily operations were uninterrupted. The initial phasing plan did not include the number of phases that ultimately were implemented, however as the project progressed and the needs of the facility and patient care areas created additional phasing measures, we adapted to completing 40 percent of our work during nighttime hours to meet our client’s needs. For 12 months, we worked day and night shifts to minimize disturbances to the active building and allowed Mays to focus on patient well-being.
