by Vaughn Construction | Jul 26, 2019

The UTHealth Continuum of Care Campus for Behavioral Health project, a new psychiatric hospital that is jointly owned by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, broke ground recently. The new facility will be located adjacent to the existing Harris County Psychiatric Center in the Texas Medical Center. The facility is the first public mental health hospital built in Houston in over 30 years, and combined with the current facility, it is expected to become the largest academic psychiatric hospital in the country.

Vaughn is serving as the construction manager-at-risk on the 220,000 SF, 240-bed facility. With a total project budget of $125 million, the facility features two patient towers with single and double occupancy rooms, group therapy rooms, seclusion rooms, quiet rooms, day rooms, visitor rooms, a therapy mall, and protected outdoor spaces. The project is scheduled for substantial completion in November 2021.The design team is Perkins + Will.
